Roofing Vocabulary: Common Home Improvement Terms

When you have work done on your roofing in Sussex NJ, your contractor might mention several technical terms, and it might get difficult to catch up. Knowing the parts of your roof, where they are, and what they do can help you in effectively communicating with your contractor. Here are a few of the terms you might want to know about:

Roofing Parts

Angled Fasteners – roofing nails and staples used by contractors to attach two roofing materials at an angle

Mats – installed underneath your shingles to serve as a base

Eaves – the part of the roof that protrudes on the side of the building—bottom edges of the roof from the fascia to the structure’s wall

Asphalt –a popular roofing material because it of its bituminous waterproofing agent

Underlayments – material installed under the main roofing material that provides a second layer of waterproofing

Roofing Anomalies

Blistering – when bubbles form under the shingles, usually due to trapped moisture

Cupping – when the shingles curl inwards

Ice Dam – when a snow load melts on a roof and re-freezes at the eave areas. Ice dams force water to “back-up” under shingles and cause leakage

Buckling – when a wrinkle or ripple affects shingles or their underlayments

These are just some of the most used home improvement terms that apply to a roofing system; there is a whole lot more for siding, gutters, windows, doors, etc. that you can learn from your local company for roofing in NJ, like us at Up and Above Contractors.
