The Hazardous Effects of an Unrepaired Roof Leak

In any kind of impending disaster, steps must be taken in order to mitigate its devastating effects. For example, you’re hit by a very strong storm, and after which, you notice that your Sussex NJ roofing has a leak. Now you wonder what you must do. A leaking roof can lead to a set of new problems that you certainly would want to avoid. So perhaps it’s best that you know what you’re possibly up against before doing something about it, yes?

1. Mold and Mildew

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, mold and mildew formation due to a roof leak can lead to various health hazards, such as asthma, allergies, and other kinds of respiratory illnesses. The formation of mold and mildew is caused by an abundance of moisture in a particular place. So where there is a leak, there is also moisture, hence the formation of mold and mildew.

2. Rusting

If there are metal fixtures located within your roof or if you have a metal roof installed, chances are that they may be susceptible to rusting because of water seeping in through the roof leak.

3. Rotting

More often than not, roof foundations are made of wood, and if there is a leak in your roof, its structural integrity may be compromised. Water can rot wood, and the leak may also draw small animals and insects into the roof.

4. Ice Dams

Unfortunately, if the roof leak occurred during winter, your home’s insulation and indoor/outdoor temperature may be compromised, which can lead to the formation of devastating ice dams.

5. Accidents

Water coming inside your home through a leak may form puddles inside the home, and this can result in safety hazards within the home. People may slip and fall because of these puddles. So it is best to take care of them and have your roof fixed as soon as possible.

Another kind of accident involves someone accidentally touching an open circuit and being electrocuted. Yet another is a fire being started when water accidentally drips on the open circuit.

These are just a few of the dangerous effects of leaving a roof leak unrepaired. It cannot be stressed enough that leaking roofing in NJ should not be taken lightly. If you’re having doubts about what should be done, perhaps it’s best to consult Up and Above Contractors. We’ll do our very best to assist you with your leaking roof and other roofing issues.
