Common Causes of Winter Roof Leaks

Being aware of the causes of winter roof leaks can save you from dealing with a roofing emergency in the middle of the season. In this blog post, local roofing contractor in Northern NJ, Up and Above Contractors, LLC, takes a look at the common causes of roof leaks during the cold winter months.

Ice Dams

Ice dams are created when snow melts on the roof, refreezes at the edge of the eaves, and forms a dam or ridge that prevents water from properly draining off the roof edge. As the weather warms up, some of the water can make its way through the roof edge, resulting in leaks. While ice dams cause the leaks, the root cause is the trapped heat in the attic, which can raise the roof temperature and melt the snow on top. The solution is to fix poorly-insulated parts of the roof and make sure it has a proper ventilation system.

Condensation in the Attic

Trapped heat and humidity in the attic can also cause condensation on the attic walls. Droplets can make their way into your living spaces, which can be easily mistaken for a leaking roof. You can control relative indoor humidity levels by running a dehumidifier, as well as turning on the range hood when you cook and the exhaust fan when you bathe. Again, the culprits that cause ice dams are to blame: inadequate ventilation traps heat and humidity, while condensation forms on surfaces cooled by poor insulation. Fortunately, both roof ventilation and insulation issues can be addressed by a roofing and siding contractor without taking the roof apart.

Installation Errors

No matter the quality of the roofing materials, they won’t perform as expected if they are not installed properly. Installation errors can become worse as the roof is continuously exposed to wear and tear. Incorrect nailing patterns may sound like a minor thing, but they can affect the roof’s wind resistance and increase the risks of roof leaks. Investing in skilled roofing contractors with installation or workmanship warranties can help make sure that your roof will keep you warm and dry through the winter season — and all other seasons, for that matter.
