Cracks vs. Splits: Differentiating Asphalt Shingle Damage

Roofs in excellent shape provide homes with optimal protection against extreme weather conditions. However, if cracks and splits start to show on your asphalt shingles, contact your trusted roofing contractor to avoid further roof damage.

Asphalt shingle splitting and cracking are two types of roof damage with significant differences.

The Causes of Cracks

Asphalt shingles are flexible, adaptable and waterproof because of the volatiles added to the material during manufacturing. However, as your asphalt roof ages, the volatiles wear off, causing the shingles to lose their flexibility and start cracking.

New roofs with cracks have different causes, which typically start from manufacturing. For example, if excessive fillers were used in making the shingles or your roof has a weak mat, this can cause cracks to develop on your shingles. Make sure to use only high-quality asphalt shingles to ensure your roof will remain intact for a long time. Furthermore, hiring an expert roofer guarantees excellent workmanship.

The Causes of Splitting

Asphalt shingles are prone to thermal expansion and contraction. During hot weather, asphalt shingles expand while their joints shrink. When the temperature outside becomes cooler, the shingles contract while the joints increase in size. This constant cycle of temperature fluctuations can cause the adhesives on the upper surface of the shingles to deteriorate more quickly. This often results in diagonal splitting on the shingles.

You can prevent splitting by doing regular roof inspections. A professional roofer can detect any splits or cracks on your roof, allowing you to address the issue promptly and avoid costlier repairs later.
