Roof Talk: Finding, Fixing and Preventing Leaks

As you and your family spend more time indoors this cold season, nothing could be worse than a leaky roof. Imagine reading a book and drops of water suddenly fall on your head. Isn’t that bothersome? But what causes leaks, and how can you prevent them?

From Where Do Roof Leaks Come?

When a roof leaks, it had probably been showing signs of damage. Be on the lookout for damaged roof shingles. This is commonly the result of a bad storm or high winds. Your gutters may also be the culprit. If there is too much clogging due to leaves, sticks and other debris in them, the water or melted snow can’t probably drain from the roof. Cracked flashing is no good either as water can seep through them.

How Can You Prevent Them?

You have perhaps heard that prevention is better than the cure, but it’s true. Not just better; it is also more cost-effective to have your roof checked rather than get a new roof altogether. While a new roof over your head offers more security, it’s also good to learn a couple of maintenance ideas. Inspect your attic, siding, roof exterior and gutters for any water marks.

Do not attempt to climb up on your own but seek an expert’s help. It is also best to ensure your attic is properly sealed off to avoid melted snow to refreeze and, therefore, result in ice dams. Ice dams are blocks of ice that obstruct your roof and prevent water from getting drained naturally.
