4 Spring Cleaning Tips for Your Fiber Cement Siding

One of the lowest maintenance options available, fiber cement siding is a great option for your home. But that doesn’t mean you won’t have to clean your siding at all. You still need to clean and maintain your fiber cement siding once in a while, and spring is a perfect time to do it. Here are some tips that can help you in spring cleaning your fiber cement siding.

1. For Oil and Grease

Oil and grease can build up on your fiber cement siding over time, but this is not so difficult to clean. What you need is a wiping cloth, a water hose and some mild dishwashing soap. To start cleaning, just dampen your cloth, and add some of the mild soap. Wipe the exterior siding properly, and then rinse well with your hose. Make sure to clean the cloth a few times during the cleaning process.

2. For Dust, Dirt and Chalk

When you have your fiber cement siding installed by a professional siding contractor, you probably think that there’s hardly any maintenance needed to keep it clean. But actually, dust, dirt and chalk can still build up on your new siding. To properly clean this, you’ll need a soft brush, a wiping cloth and a water hose. Dampen your cloth, and then wipe over a part of your siding. Rinse it all down with your water hose, and cleanse your cloth to remove any dirt particles. Then, repeat the process until you’re finished. Make sure to clean the cloth properly to prevent any dirt particles from scratching your fiber cement siding.

3. For Mold and Mildew

Cleaning mold and mildew off your fiber cement siding requires a bit more effort than cleaning off dirt and grease. Sometimes, mildew can pass off as dirt. So, if your siding still looks dirty after cleaning it from dirt and grease, then it’s probably mildew buildup. To clean this, use a cleaner that’s specific for mold and mildew. Follow its instructions, and give the area a thorough cleaning.

4. Maintaining a Clean Siding

While the fiber cement product is water resistant, caulking can still happen if the edges of your home’s windows and door frames were not sealed tightly. Some contractors use silicone caulk around the adjoined parts of your home so the windows and door frames of your home are likely to have a layer of caulking on their edges. Make sure these areas are sealed tightly to prevent this from happening. It’s important to check your siding’s paint as well. Inspect it regularly for any sign of peeling and other damage. The paint on fiber cement siding usually lasts up to 15 years, but only if it’s properly cleaned and maintained.
